Sandra Santanyes takes the double, Jérôme Gilloux widens the gap

Girona (Spain), Saturday 25 September 2021 – The second race of WES Costa Brava-Girona round is in the books with an impressive win of Women’s local heroine Sandra Santanyes (Trek) and Jérôme Gilloux (Moustache)coming back to winning after three second places in a row. For the first time, the weekend featured two races on the same racetrack, run counterclockwise yesterday and clockwise today.

Focused on Qualirace 2 and Day 2 race start, the Catalan managed to take a solid lead and get to the finish line leaving the Argentinian Josefina Casadey (Canyon) and Ares Masip (Orbea), also from Catalonia, behind. All debuting Women report today’s track was harder than yesterday’s, more demanding and will go back home with an impressive experience at the E-MTB World Cup.

Looking at the Women’s standings, Mélanie Pugin (BH) is still the front-runner and Sofia Wiedenroth (Specialized) will race the last round to grab the second overall ahead of Nathalie Schneitter (Trek).

Joris Ryf (Bergstrom) looked much happier than yesterday as he managed to reach the second step of the podium again. The runner up is now 22 points behind the World Champion and WES standings leader Gilloux and the fight for the World Cup title is still open with one race to go (25 pts to the race winner with a one-shot race to go).

In third place, the surprising Spaniard Ismael Esteban (BH) finished 14” behind the Swiss and looks forward to more e-bikes at WES final round in three weeks time.

Following his success in Day 1, Dutchman Jeroen van Eck’s (American Eagle) suffered engine problems on lap 1 and had to end his race, although in style and already focusing on the next round. Sweet memories of his first ever win in WES Barcelona 2019 will take him to the last round. Simon Gegenheimer (Corratec) from Germany had a puncture and stopped at the finish line along with van Eck.

Frenchman Théo Charmes (Cube) is still third in the overall standings thanks to today’s 6th place.

Magneti Marelli Power Lap Award of Round 4 goes to the race winners, Santanyes and Gilloux. The season final prize to be awarded in Round 5 at Castelldefels-Barcelona, with the World Champ leading the standings in the Men’s side of the paddock and Pugin in the Women’s.

VIP guests of the day from world motorsports, Carlos and David Checacompeted in Race 2 at Girona and report they will repeat the tough and exciting experience next round and next year, respectively.
